I see my past, present and future by those who touched my life. I have become the person I am today thanks to those who recognized my talent and ability with encouraging words of wisdom, constructive criticism, purchase of my artwork, and my scholarship opportunity! As many of you know, I am continuing to develop my career as a professional artist. I have devised a plan that includes your consideration and support.
I graduated from Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2004 at the age of twenty-one. The last five years I have worked diligently at building a portfolio of artwork, mostly in the media of oil and acrylic paintings. I have had several successful shows in small Portland art venues. I have worked full time for a non-profit organization by the name of The Fund For Public Interest Research. I've worked as a canvasser and field manager on environmental campaigns such as sustainable energy, super fund clean up, and protecting forests that impact the entire nation. This work has helped me develop skills in community organizing, raising public awareness, fund raising, and assisting in lobbying efforts to state and federal politicians. This work has opened my eyes not only to the environmental issues that threaten us but also to the change community voice can make. As a result, my passion to address these issues have manifested into important themes in my artwork. The inner-connectedness of humans, animals and nature is a powerful subject I commonly use. Working at this job has provided me a living wage and enough savings to travel through Central and South America. Traveling through breath taking regions like the Bolivian Altiplano and Patagonia has inspired a plethora of images I plan to incorporate. However, as you may understand, it is difficult to work 46 hours a week and still find adequate energy and time into creating artwork at the rate I would like to.
These images have had a profound impact on many in my community and based on this feedback, I want to share this vision with a larger audience. Several respected mentors and consultants have inspired me to participate as an exhibitor at The New York Fine Art Expo in New York City in March of 2010 (website www.artexpos.com )as well as the Santa Fe Indian Market (website www.swaia.org ). This will be a platform to show a selection of my best pieces to galleries, art collectors, corporate and retail buyers who will attend this event coming from all parts of the world. This kind of exposure will open the door to a variety of international venues and collectors. My inventory will consist of hand enhanced limited edition giclee prints.
In making this dream a reality I am facing some financial obstacles, which I am working to creatively overcome. I have already begun making professional scans and giclee prints of my strongest paintings. This process of archetypal scanning and printing will allow me to sell the limited reproductions, while increasing the value of my original paintings. In addition to the costs of replicating my art, there are travel and shipping costs, as well as exhibition fees. (See attachment A – a detailed budget).
So, I am reaching out to those of you who recognize my talent and ability as an artist, to help me transform this dream into a reality. My goal is to raise the funds as outlined in our budget by January 2010.
I have enclosed a description of various sizes and quality prints of my artwork as a gift, in return for your support. Please share this letter with your circle of family and friends, who may be interested in supporting a young, upcoming artist! Your support and financial contribution is greatly appreciated and moves me one step closer to my goal!

Thank you for supporting me.
Sincerely,
Kaila Rose Farrell-Smith
(971)244-2399
1025 N.
